Shumka at 50!
March 3 & 4, 2012
Ukrainian dance has been part of Canadian culture since the first immigrants landed in 1891, and it’s been kept alive in part by the Ukrainian Shumka Dance company from Edmonton. Now, Shumka is celebrating half a century as one of Canada’s leading dance troupes, and they’re inviting you to join them for a performance that combines a retrospective with exciting new works, including two Hopaks.
The festive Hopak, sometimes called the national dance of the Ukraine, is aptly named. It means “to jump,” and that’s exactly what Shumka’s dancers do when they perform one. Watch as the dancers swirl and spin across the stage in a dazzling display of carefully choreographed acrobatics.
In addition to traditional Ukrainian folk performances, Shumka dancers draw on their experiences as Canadians, challenging conventional boundaries and delivering a unique, energetic performance that speaks to the heritage and experience of its dancers. Prepare for a performance that blends rural and urban culture with classic Ukrainian music and original compositions. You won’t soon forget this vibrant performance!
